Reception is a comedy where Erica and Pat are always trying to learn the right thing, so they can do it, but they are cousinly putting their feet in their mouths, and having to scramble to make things right, which creates lots of tension and comedy.

 

Voice overs offer a chance for the characters to not say the wrong thing, while still letting the viewer in on the joke:

                           

                 #1: “Do you like my shirt?"

                 #2 :(aloud) “Yes, I do.”

                 #2 : (voice over) “Even though it makes                                        you look like you glued a dead alpaca to your                            chest.”

 In this way, voice overs also give the viewer a sense of the inner life of the characters, so they can make connections with them.

This leads to bonding with characters.
